Graduate interview coaching

Graduate interviews can feel very different from school, university or early work experience. Candidates are often bright, capable and well prepared, but still find it difficult to show their judgement, motivation and potential clearly in interview.

I have worked with many graduate candidates over the years, but graduate coaching is now handled through a trusted specialist coach I know well. This allows candidates to receive focused support from someone who has made graduate and early-career interview preparation a particular area of expertise.

Client review

I am a recent graduate with a year’s placement experience in my industry and thought that I would find it easy to get interviews. I spent four hours with Elizabeth and came away with a refreshed CV, a knowledge of my “competencies” and belief that I could succeed. One smallish employer offered me a job after two interviews but I turned it down because I was waiting on the results of my second interview with a large corporate who I really wanted to work for. Fortunately they also offered me a job, and I start later this month. Without Elizabeth’s help my CV was almost useless at presenting my worth, and without her coaching to develop my “competency stories” and interview performance there is no way I would have got through even one interview. Without doubt every penny was money very well spent. I highly recommend Elizabeth to anyone looking to secure their dream job.

Thanks, Elizabeth!

What effective graduate interview preparation looks like now

Graduate recruitment has changed.

With online advice, AI tools, and scripted examples everywhere, many candidates arrive over-prepared but under-responsive — delivering polished answers that don’t quite land in the room.

Good graduate coaching focuses on finding the right balance.

Coaching focuses on:

  • Understanding what assessors are genuinely selecting for

  • Preparing thoroughly, without memorising scripts

  • Responding naturally to unfamiliar or follow-up questions

  • Showing thinking, judgement, and motivation — not just rehearsed examples

The candidates who tend to perform best are those who come across as:

  • Thoughtful and engaged

  • Able to reflect and adapt

  • Comfortable explaining their thinking

  • Authentic, rather than over-coached

Those are the qualities interviewers remember.

Who is this coaching for

Graduate interview coaching is particularly well suited if:

  • You’re applying for competitive graduate schemes, internships, placements, or entry-level roles

  • You’re finding interviews harder than expected, despite strong academic or CV credentials

  • You want to understand how interviews are assessed, not just what to say

  • You see this as a considered investment in your early career

Graduate candidates have been supported successfully through competitive processes across the public and private sectors, including consulting, finance, professional services, retail, engineering and the Civil Service. What matters most isn’t the name of the organisation, but the standard of assessment and preparing you to meet that standard with confidence and clarity.

What graduate interviews usually involve

Graduate interview processes vary widely and may include:

  • Pre-recorded video interviews

  • Live online or in-person interviews

  • Assessment centres or blended assessments

Questions may be:

  • Behaviour-based

  • Strength-based

  • Value-based

  • Situational or scenario-led

Preparation focuses on helping you understand what assessors are listening for, so you can respond clearly and calmly — without second-guessing the “right” answer.

Coaching approach

Graduate interview coaching is offered as one-to-one support, tailored to where you are in the process and what you need most.

Some candidates benefit from focused interview preparation; others need broader support across applications, confidence, and interview technique. The right scope can be agreed after you have completed the consultation form and your coaching needs have been reviewed.

Coaching typically focuses on:

  • Interpreting interview questions accurately

  • Structuring clear, assessable answers

  • Practising responding under realistic interview conditions

  • Developing confidence without scripting

Sessions are delivered online, with practical feedback you can apply immediately.

Coaching options

Graduate interview coaching can be tailored to the candidate’s needs, timescale and stage in the recruitment process. For some candidates, a couple of hours of focused coaching, preparation and follow-up support is enough to help them prepare for a specific graduate interview or assessment stage. Others benefit from the six-hour graduate one-to-one coaching programme, which provides more structured support across applications, interview preparation and assessment centre preparation.

The six-hour programme can include:

  • Preparation for graduate applications, interviews and assessment centres
  • Support with pre-recorded video interviews, live interviews and assessment day interviews
  • Help developing clear examples and stronger interview answers
  • Practical interview coaching on Zoom, with video recording where appropriate
  • Bespoke preparation sent in advance of sessions
  • Interview preparation guidance and practice questions
  • Ongoing mentoring and support during the programme

The right level of support will depend on the candidate’s experience, confidence, deadline and the type of graduate process they are preparing for. Importantly, the preparation does not only apply to one organisation. The skills, structure and confidence developed through coaching can be applied across multiple graduate interviews.

Coaching fees

Graduate interview coaching can be arranged as focused preparation for a specific interview or assessment stage, or as a more structured six-hour graduate coaching programme.  Once I’ve reviewed your enquiry, I’ll advise on the most appropriate next step and likely coaching format.

Client review

Elizabeth was absolutely fantastic as an interview. I had two sessions and got my current job in the next interview I had! I would definitely recommend Elizabeth for anyone who is having trouble finding work, especially new graduates like myself.
